We love pairing books and activities in our house! It’s proven that kids learn better when they are active and hands-on. When I decided to read “Wonders of the USA” for the 4th of July, I knew that a USA Map activity would be the perfect pairing! It is a mix of care-free coloring with a little learning thrown in.
Materials for the USA Map Activity
All you need for this activity is the Wonders of the USA book, the printed USA Map (free below), and crayons. I put the map down and opened the book to the first page, where it revealed a map of the United States. My daughter giggled as she realized her map matches the one in the book. Then, we took to coloring! First, she colored in her state her favorite color. Then, she colored all the other states different colors. I did section off each region so she wouldn’t have to color each state a different color and could do one color by region instead. She had other plans though and wanted mommy and her to color each state a different color together. We love coloring and doing crafts together! After the map is colored, have your child write the name of their state and city on top.
Wonders of the USA Book
Of course, we finished reading the book, too. This is one of the Shine-A-Light books from Usborne Books & More. We love these books because they are another hands-on way to engage children in reading. Our daughter loves to grab her special flashlight she has for these books and “go on an adventure” to see what each page reveals. This book talks about the White House, Mt. Rushmore, Denali, the Liberty Bell, and more! More facts about each US Wonder are listed in the back.
