July 13th is Embrace Your Geekness Day. What is “Geekness,” you ask? I asked the geekiest guy I know for the answer, my husband. “Geekness is about having a passion for something and knowing everything about it. It doesn’t have to be a video game or a movie, but it is something your inner child enjoys.” I can get behind this definition. We have been together for over a decade and I have spent many nights listening to him go on and on about a video game or a project he was working on. He is quick to throw out a quote from a movie and makes references to things I forgot even existed. His passion has rubbed off on me, as he has persuaded me to do things (play Magic the Gathering) and watch movies (LOTR) which I would have likely never done had we not been together.

How Does One Embrace Their Geekness?
This answer is simple – BE YOU! Wear your geeky shirt, play your video games, watch Star Wars for the 100th time. Whatever lets your inner geek shine, make sure to do it today. Don’t hide your passion from others. Introduce your friends to a strategic game they have never played. Post your latest accomplishment on Facebook for the world to see. Invite friends to come watch sci-fi movies with you. Make that movie a “sit under the stars” movie by using a projector outside to really boost your geek swagger.
Is your child artistic? Use the free printable below to let them create their own comic! If your kid is a little older and wants to try their hand at comics, Usborne Books & More has a couple of great titles to inspire creativity. Make Your Own Comics is geared for ages six and older; Write and Draw Your Own Comics is suggested for age 10 and older. If your kid would prefer to read their comics, check out UBAM’s Graphic Legends series. There are twelve titles to choose from, including Thor, Sherlock Holmes, The Wizard of Oz, King Arthur, and more! These have been great choices to get reluctant readers interested in reading again.
If comics aren’t their thing, they can learn about The Amazing Discoveries of 100 Brilliant Scientists or The Story of Inventions. Younger readers can Look Inside How Things Work with this fun and engaging lift the flap book. For your budding scientist who likes a hands-on approach, check out this selection of STEM Scribble books.

Geekdom Gear
It would be remiss of me if I did not mention Geekdom Gear on a day to celebrate geekness. My husband is all things geek. He stays up all night playing video games, he’s part of a guild, he was part of a monthly Dungeons and Dragons campaign, he has built his own Iron Man suit…three times. He has a passion for all things “geek”. Therefore, he decided to open his own shop, Geekdom Gear. He comes up with designs that are available on a variety of products, such as men’s and women’s apparel, home décor, and he is starting to add a kid’s line. If you are looking for new geek gear, this is the spot! Follow the shop on Facebook to stay updated on new designs and products.
May the Force Be With You
Now you are armed with all you need to go out and embrace your geekness! I hope your family enjoys some of the activities listed here. Geekness is about so much more than just video games and Star Wars. Most of our greatest scientists and inventors were labeled geeks. Helping your kid embrace their geekness just may inspire them to be a pioneer in science.
Happy Learning!
