Counting Chocolate Chips Cookie Printable

Is there anything better in life than a fresh, warm, gooey chocolate chip cookie? I mean, yes, of course our babies are the BEST things in life…but chocolate chip cookies are a very close second. I love pairing hands on activities in our learning studies. Since it is National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day I have decided it is only right to make some cookies today. I will also pair a couple fun learning activities in addition to our baking, like this Counting Chocolate Chips Cookie Printable.

First, Bake the Cookies!

Baking chocolate chip cookies is not only a fun family activity to do together, but it is also educational for your kids. My daughter enjoys baking so much she actually listens to all my directions, every time. Her overall listening and following directions skills continually improve and I see the impact baking has on her. She understands that if we do not follow the directions, our recipe will not turn out as desired, and we apply this to other scenarios in our everyday life.

Of course, baking also allows them to build on math and science skills, as well. She helps me count, reads the recipe to tell me how many of specific ingredients, and we are beginning to learn measurements. Since she is only four, we do not go too in depth with all the wonderful science lessons you can include in the kitchen, but we go over some basics. For example, she knows that eggs helps bind ingredients together, and as she gets older I will explain how.

Using the Counting Chocolate Chips Cookie Printable

This printable is designed to be used a few different ways, depending on what resources you have at home. I choose to laminate my printables so we can have long-term use. I love reusing products and producing as little waste as I can. If you have a laminator, my preferred method is to cut out each square, laminate them, and then have your child use a clothespin to mark the correct number of chips on each cookie. This method also allows children to work on their fine motor skills and pincher grip as they use the clothespin.

I have also used these dry erase pocket sleeves when I was not able to laminate my printable. You can slip the printable right in the pocket and have your child use a dry erase marker to circle the correct number of chocolate chips on each cookie. This is a great alternative to keep your printables reusable and I highly recommend the sleeves. Of course, you can always just print the sheets and have your child use a marker, crayon, or dot marker on the paper for one-time use.

Don’t Forget a Book

You know I love pairing a book with all our activities – we both love to read! This activity is perfect to pair with the long-time cherished book, “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.” This is a childhood classic that every kid should read at least once. In case you didn’t know, there is a whole series of these books. If your kid likes this one, or if you plan on doing any muffin or donut baking make sure to check out the whole series to save some money.

If your kid is ready for a chapter book, check out Freddie’s Amazing Bakery, The Cookie Mystery. Each book in this chapter book series includes a recipe and glossary of terms.

Count Your Cookies and Eat Them, Too!

I hope your family enjoys a day full of baking goodness. The kids can work on the printable while the cookies bake, then they can enjoy the freshly baked goodness while listening to a fun story. That is certainly my idea of quality family time!
