Everyone is gearing up for back to school. I am so excited to be homeschooling my daughter this year. While there are challenges that come with homeschooling, I see so many opportunities opening up to us. The first thing I did in my planning phase was decide, on a high-level, what I wanted to teach. My goal was to provide structure and the freedom to explore areas of interest. This list of monthly lesson plan themes will be used as a base to help guide us through lessons each year.
Lessons will be created with these themes while still giving her the opportunity to expand her knowledge when she finds something interesting. During our farm unit she will need to tell me what letter certain plants begin with and how plants grow. We can expand this knowledge by planting our own garden or visiting a farm.
Monthly Themes
My themes for each month correspond with the season and what activities we may be doing during that time. Every activity can be a teachable moment. Did you go trick or treating? Count how many pieces of candy you got. Play a game by sorting the candy by size, color, or type. These themes will help provide some structure to your lessons while being able to include activities you are already doing.
The activities and printables related to each theme will be linked below as they become available. You can download the Monthly Lesson Plan Themes printable for free by clicking below.
Additional Themes
You will notice there are two themes for each month. The first set will help us focus on developing her academic skills. The second set of themes will focus on life skills. You can always include any additional sub-themes that may relate to your main theme as well. During our winter theme I will include a sub-theme about winter sports and we will explore her interest. I just may have a future Olympic skater!
Happy Learning!
