Last year we decided to make a pit-stop in Georgia on our way home from visiting family in Florida. We planned to explore a couple of beaches, visit some landmarks, and immerse ourselves in a new city. Among our stops was Fort Frederica National Monument, which unexpectedly kickstarted our US National Parks Junior Ranger Adventure.
So Many Parks, So Little Time
What began as a casual day trip to a National Park evolved into a thrilling quest to visit all the US National Parks. Did you know there are a total of 429 different National Parks to explore, with more continually being added? The National Park Service encompasses a variety of sites, including National Parks, Battlefields, Monuments, Memorials, Historic Sites, Preserves, and more. The abundance of locations where we could earn cancellation stamps and Junior Ranger badges amazed me, prompting me to start this adventure right away with our daughter.
Junior Ranger Program
Nearly every type of park in the National Park System offers a Junior Ranger program. You can visit their website to access details about each park. You can even download the booklet to complete the program at home for some parks. Opting for this method allows you to print your badge, but if you visit in person, you can obtain a physical badge and/or patch.
Passport Books
Additionally, there is a passport book available for purchase to collect cancellation stamps from each park you visit. There are two versions: one suitable for adults or families, and another specifically designed for kids. Take the book with you during your travels and receive a free cancellation stamp at each park. In case you forget your book, they offer stickers to stamp and affix in your book once you return home.
Prepare Before Your Visit
Before you visit any of the National Park Service locations, decide whether you want to participate in the Junior Ranger program or collect cancellation stamps, so you can prepare. While the passport books are available at most locations, there are some that may not have them available. You can purchase them online prior to your trip. You will also need to decide if you want one single book for the whole family, if you want to get the Junior Ranger passport books for each child, or some combination of the two. If you are going to participate in the Junior Ranger program, allow a little more time at each park so the booklets can be completed. The number of pages to fill out varies based on the child’s age and the park’s requirements.
No matter your choice, exploring the National Parks will create everlasting memories. There is an abundance of discoveries and enjoyment awaiting you. It’s a wonderful opportunity to bond as a family while learning in an exciting envirnoment.
